Management of Black Thrips (Thrips parvispinus) & Leaf Curl Complex in Chilli Crops
Published by ICAR-IIHR Agronomy Panel • Category: Spice Pathology • 7 min read
In recent seasons, chilli farmers across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka have faced severe yield losses due to the invasive Black Thrips (Thrips parvispinus) alongside traditional thrips (Scirtothrips dorsalis) and Chilli Leaf Curl Virus. Black thrips feed aggressively on flowers, buds, and young leaf undersides, causing flower drop and pod deformation.
1. Diagnostic Symptoms
- Leaf Curling: Upward and downward boat-shaped curling of leaves with puckered veins and thickened textures.
- Silvery Scars: Silvery-white or brownish scars on the undersides of leaves and developing chilli pods.
- Dieback & Flower Drop: Heavy infestation causes blackening of tender shoot tips and dropping of 80% of flowers.
2. ICAR Approved Insecticide Spray Dosages
🧪 Certified Chemical Options (per Liter of Water):
- Coromandel Finio (Diafenthiuron 47% + Pyriproxyfen 5% SC): 1.25 ml per Liter of water + Sticker (0.5ml/L). PHI: 14 Days.
- Bayer Spintor / Delegate (Spinetoram 11.7% SC): 0.9 ml per Liter of water. PHI: 7 Days.
- Fipronil 5% SC (Reagent): 1.5 ml per Liter of water. PHI: 14 Days.
3. Organic IPM Trap & Spray Protocol
- Blue & Yellow Sticky Traps: Install 30 to 40 blue sticky traps per acre at crop height to trap adult flying thrips.
- Neem Kernel Extract: Spray 5% NSKE (Neem Seed Kernel Extract 50ml/L) + 1ml liquid soap weekly.
Disclaimer: Always consult your local Agricultural Extension Officer (AEO) or Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) scientist before spraying high-concentration agro-chemicals.
